Toddler and Parent Playgroup- August-September 2017
The Blue Stars Team believe that as a parent, you are the key to your Childs success. Our first parent and toddler group ran for a 6-week course August and September 2017. This included a hands on assessment, and parent training every week in how to get the best from your child.
The group focused on developing skills in communication , play and social/group skills as well as training parents with the tools they needed. The playgroups are fun, play based sessions in which a Blue Stars team members works 1:1 with the child and coaches the parents through the targets to empower them to continue the targets at home. It focuses on setting up learning opportunities through play to motivate the child. Motivation is the key to learning! The playgroup started with an assessment week, where a Blue Stars BCBA team member assessed the child and their skills and from this developed personalised intervention plans. The following playgroup sessions have involved a welcome song, some learning/play time then snack and a group activity. If you are interested in our future playgroups or projects please get in contact using the contact page ✨💙✨ |
During the playgroup, the main focus has been on the following skills:
Communication Skills
The playgroup has focused on developing communication skills so the child is able to get their wants and needs met in an appropriate way. This has involved sounds exposure and modelling sounds to the child to encourage them to make an attempt at vocalising to get access to the toys they want. For some of our children, this involves pointing/.reaching towards a ball, or making a single sounds such as "buh" for ball. For others it may be a full sentence such as "I want to play with the ball". The target is individualised to the child.
Play Skills
The playgroup also has a great emphasis on teaching children to play with toys appropriately. Fo the children in our playgroup this has involves cause/effect play, exploratory play, and play skills such a sharing and turn taking.
Learning to Learn Skills
Learning to learn skills involves skills such as imitation. Imitation is the ability to copy another person. We use this skill to learn most new skills! In the playgroup, this has been incorporated into play such as copying each other drinking from a pretend teacup, using a paintbrush and pushing cars. Again, each target is completely individualised to the child.
Group Skills
Group skills are a huge part of our playgroup. Its important to learn how to socialise within a group and for our first playgroup, this has involved activities such as sitting at the table together for snack, singing songs together, and engaging in either joint play or parallel play.
